1. Tensile FabricTensile Structure

A tensile structure is a construction of elements carrying only tension although, for the most part, they are supported by some form of compression or bending components such as masts, compression rings or beams. Tensile membrane structures are most often used as roofs as they can economically and attractively span large distances. They have long been used in tents, where the guy ropes provide pre-tension to the fabric and allow it to withstand loads.

Steady technological progress has increased the popularity of tensile roof structures. The low weight of the materials makes construction easier and cheaper than standard designs, especially when vast open spaces have to be covered.

The final shape or form of a fabric structure depends on the:

1. shape or pattern of the fabric
2. geometry of the supporting structure (such as masts, cables, ringbeams, etc.)
3. pre-tension applied to the fabric or its supporting structure.
